Trendy Techniques for Decorating with Mirrors

Posted by Eric Morgan on 18th Jul 2014

Mirrors are an interior designer’s best friend, illuminating dark spaces, adding touches of elegance and even creating the illusion of additional space. Decorative, ornate mirrors can also serve as works of art, dressing up fireplaces and dining room’s banquet consoles. Mirrors come in a wide variety of styles and types, ranging from classic round mirrors and oval mirrors to more contemporary rectangle mirrors.

  • Window Dressings – Consider having custom mirrors made to place in antique window frame designs. Hang these above a neutral-tone sofa paired with a playful, colorful throw rug for a chic, yet glamorous look that is sure to impress guests.
  • Modern – Contemporary mirrors can be custom designed to feature an interweaving pattern that resembles water’s ripples. Instead of using traditional wooden headboards, use this modern-day mirror design to decorate from ceiling to floor. Pair with a paisley black and white bedspread and orange throw pillows for an eclectic, yet refined look.
  • Elegant – Venetian-style bathroom mirrors are all the rage this season, gracing vanities, bathroom counters and even hanging above deep soaking tubs. Opt for tranquil colors in bathrooms, pairing silver framed mirrors with light gray walls.
  • Smoke and Mirrors – Consider antiquing mirrors using a traditional mercury-glass technique that adds instant sophistication to any antique-style home. Hang an artistic painting on a wall of panels for a brilliant picture-within-a-picture effect.
  • Galleries – Hang a collection of similar style mirrors, such as oval convex mirrors, in one area. This grouping becomes a focal point for bedrooms, entryways, living room areas or dining rooms.
  • Gold – Gold sunburst-style mirrors have never been more popular than they are this year. Reflecting a special Art Deco style, these vintage mirrors pair well with eclectic decor, bright colors or even more sophisticated, refined designs.
  • Subtle – Select a mirror frame that reflects a tone-on-tone wall color for a dramatic look that is subtle, yet makes an elegant statement.
  • Oversized – For large dining rooms, consider making an oversized statement with a large custom mirror. Due to the intensity of the large scale, the mirror will appear to be a fine piece of artwork, helping reflect light and tying rooms together.
  • Symmetry – Opt for mirror symmetry by placing matching style and size mirrors to the right and left side of fireplaces, adorning fireplace mantles with a piece of refined artwork. The effect is subtle, yet very sophisticated.
  • Nature – Embrace nature and adorn circle mirrors with wire branches, metal flower cutouts, metal leaves, etc. This will give a unique, whimsical look to homes, bringing outdoor beauty indoors.
  • Panels – Use a series of large rectangular mirrors as wall panels to help reflect light in small or dark spaces. Hang large mirrors above a sofa or sectional to give the illusion of additional space, which avoids drawing the eyes downward.
  • Sunburst – Sun-style mirrors are the latest hit, with rays unfurling outwards and projecting art like-quality beauty. Whether it is metal sunbursts or palette board inspiration, these designs are available in a wide variety of styles.
