According to the famous myth, the first mirror was discovered by a boy called Narcissus. He was the son of a god and he was very, very handsome and proud. Many women fell in love with him, but he turned them away.

One of the women who loved Narcissus was a nymph called Echo. Hera, the Queen of Mt. Olympus, cast a spell over her servant Echo for talking too much. As punishment, Echo could henceforth only repeat what someone else said. Poor Echo! She was in love with handsome Narcissus, and yearned to tell him so!

One day Echo saw Narcissus admiring himself in a clear pond. Looking at his reflection, he vainly said to the face in the water, "I love you." Echo repeated, "I love you," and meant it. Echo stepped forward with open arms, wanting to cuddle him. But Narcissus would not look up. He thought his reflection spoke and stood gazing vainly at himself. Echo was so upset she left and hid in a cave, until nothing was left of her, except her voice.

Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus died. Where he died a flower grew, and that flower is called a Narcissus.

Archimedes

Another Greek tale states that the mathematician, Archimedes, invented giant mirrors that used the sun to set Roman warships afire during an attack on Syracuse in 212 BC.

Medusa

Another legend has it that the hero, Perseus, killed Medusa by using a mirrored shield. The creature was so hideous that any human who made eye contact with her was immediately turned to stone. By watching the reflection of the monster in his shield, Perseus used his sword to slice off Medusa’s head without having to look directly at her.

Snow White

Another example, this time from the German Tales of the Brothers Grimm, is Snow White. The wicked queen consults a magic oval wall mirror to determine the identity of the most beautiful woman in the world.

Peel the back off and place them on your bathroom mirror. Now, use a gold or silver paint pen to add outlines and details on the contact paper. If any sticky residue is left, then Windex will get it off.

Steps

1. Measure the wall space where you plan to hang a wall mirror using a ruler or tape measure.

2. Compare measurements of your wall mirror to make sure it will fit on the wall properly where you plan to hang it.

3. Put a small mark on the wall with a pencil to indicate where you want the top of your wall mirror to be.

4. Use the hanging wire on the back of the mirror to mark the spot on the wall where you want the mirror to hang.

5. Select the best spot on the wall for your nail, screws or hook to hang your mirror.

6. Check the alignment of your wall mirror one more time prior to pounding in a nail or drilling screw holes.

7. Put your hardware, including hooks, nails, brackets or screws, in the proper location for your wall mirror.

How to Choose Hanging Hardware

Hooks come in a variety of sizes, which can be found to hold various sizes of mirrors. Nails work best on light-weight mirrors.

Screws will hold heavier mirrors.

Brackets work when your wall mirror has no hanging wire, but can also be added for extra support.

8. Hang your wall mirror by its hanging wire or attach it to the brackets in its new location.

9. Step back and check the alignment of your wall mirror to make sure it looks right.

10. Clean any fingerprints or smudges off your wall mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels.

 Tips

Because all wall mirrors are different, judge your mirror by its size, weight and thought the basics will be similar, hardware and placement will vary.

Consider that heavier mirrors will need extra support. Dry wall anchors might be your best option to protect your mirror and your wall, especially if you can't locate a wall stud.

Have someone help you with proper placement and lifting when hanging a wall mirror.

Try experimenting with different styles and sizes of wall mirrors throughout your home for a fresh update to your decor. With the basic steps for hanging wall mirrors, you can easily place round, oval or rectangle mirrors in any room or area you desire.

Consider using a level to help guide you with the proper alignment when hanging a wall mirror. This will show you exactly how straight or crooked the mirror is and where to make adjustments.

Warnings

Never hang a heavy mirror on a small nail or hook. Over time, the weight can put tension on the wall. This can lead to your mirror falling and breaking, and part of the wall being destroyed as well.

Never attempt to hang a wall mirror without removing objects, such as shelves or electronics, away from the area that you will be working. This will help you to avoid breaking any objects in the event of an accident.

For the best results, never hang a wall mirror alone. Have someone with you to help you align the mirror properly as well as help with lifting it.

Our wall mirror sizes are measured by outside dimensions. That means our frames are measured from the very outside edge instead of the size of mirror placed in it. We measure our products this way so that you know the total amount of space the frame and mirror will use and can accurately visualize your mirror all the wall in your home, including the width of the frame. We have such a variety of frames, from small thin modern moldings to larger antique style moldings, a mirror of the same size can look quite different with different frame moldings. We use outside dimensions to give you the most accurate measurements no matter what style frame you choose. The outside dimension width is listed first followed by the height. You can change the orientation of the mirror to fit the style of your home when you hang it

For our round framed mirrors the outside dimension listed on our site is the diameter of the circle from any point on the outside edge through the center. Our round framed mirrors are perfect circles so the length and width are exactly the same. 

For our oval framed mirrors the width listed is the widest part of the frame measured from the outside edge through the center, and the height is the tallest part measured from the outside edge through the center. 

For our rectangle mirrors the width is measured by connecting any two points on the outside side edges of the frame with a horizontal line. The height is measured by connecting two points on the top and bottom edges of the frame with a vertical line.

As you browse our mirrors, you will notice the description of each item lists the width of the frame itself.

If you want to know the size of the mirror included with your frame, subtract the width of the frame from the outside dimensions. 

For example, one of our best sellers, Sante Fe Oval in Antique White has outside dimensions of 14in x 18in. The actual frame is 1 3/8in wide. So the size of the mirror is 12 5/8 x 16 5/8. 

We provide the frames' outside dimensions to give you the most accurate measurements so you can plan your wall space appropriately. We encourage you to use these measurements to create an outline on your wall so you can accurately visualize your mirror on the wall and know that you are getting exactly what you want.
