Mirror-Making Statements

Posted by Eric Morgan on 27th Jul 2014

Nearly everyone knows the age-old Grimm’s Fairytale “Snow White” and the infamous line, “Mirror Mirror on the wall…” A common saying ingrained in today’s society, it is popular for homeowners and interior designers to create unique, one-of-a-kind custom mirrors to highlight individuality and a unique sense of style. The following features upscale mirror designs that are sure to wow the senses.

Textures – Custom mirrors are blank works of art. Add sunken driftwood twigs that feature raw wood edges, natural materials and unique shapes to create a personalized mirror frame. Experiment with do-it-yourself techniques or add memorable, personalized embellishments.

Outside the Rectangle – Instead of going with standard rectangle mirrors, opt for round mirrors that feature fun, exciting geometric frames. These are easy to create yourself or consider having a metal designer sculpt a unique metal shape, such as a lotus flower, interlocking circles, etc., for an exclusive look.

Artwork – Treat mirrors as though they are revered artwork. They should be placed on display. Designers recommend hanging mirrors above fireplaces, which gives homes a cozy glow and adds light-reflecting ambiance to rooms.

Contrast – Mirrors do not have to match walls or furniture colors. In fact, since mirrors are their own artwork, they can be the opposite color, provided colors blend with décor. In fact, a bold frame against a neutral wall makes an outstanding visual impact.

Color – All neutral rooms benefit from a splash of accessorized color. Consider adding bright red framed mirrors to all-white bathrooms for a punchy kick of color that is energizing and vibrant.

Position – The most important key to having a mirror look simply stunning is the positioning. A mirror’s position must reflect harmony, scale and blend well with its surroundings, while allowing it to subtly stand out. Make sure mirrors’ reflections are not too busy and edit knickknacks and other items, if needed. Mirrors look best reflecting simplicity, which coincides with harmony and balance.

Avoid Solo – Avoiding single mirrors is best, especially if the mirrors are smaller. Antique mirrors are often small and work best placed in pairs of two to four groupings.

Dimensional – Add dimensional to casual, everyday frameless mirrors with soft layers of ruffled fabric. Paired against lightly textured wallpaper, this adds an airy drama that is stylish and architecturally interesting.

Alignment – Mirrors can be placed either vertically or horizontally. Generally, the alignment depends on if the wall is long or short, as this helps define the space.

Bold – Bold mirrors are making an intense comeback with swirls, mosaic detailing and shadows appearing in designer showrooms nationwide. These unique mirrors offer antique-style detailing that are memorable, sophisticated and elegant.

Timeless wall mirror trends include vintage mirrors, such as Art Deco styles. The shapes are stunning and never go out of style. Mirrors do not require mounting, but oversized mirrors can simply be placed at an angle to rest against walls. Finally, if one mirror is not enough, opt for pairs, especially in bathrooms. Most importantly, people should have fun decorating and enjoy the rewards of their fruitful decorating endeavors.
